YOUth DECIDE: Creating a culture of voting

YOUth DECIDE’s mission is to reach, register to vote, and educate students in civics and the importance of voting.  The vision is to create a culture of voting.

YOUth DECIDE:

  • Partners with local public and private high schools and community colleges.

  • Engages youth in voter education, voter registration and getting out the vote.

  • Guided by League volunteers who are experienced educators.

Teacher and Student Toolkit

The Toolkit supports student and faculty efforts to create a vibrant community-based culture of voting through student-led activities integral to civic engagement. The Toolkit is rich with multi-media resources, field-tested sample classroom presentations and ideas which teachers can customize to suit their needs.

  • During the 2023-2024 School Year, YOUth DECIDE Committee provided voter education presentations or school-sponsored voter registration events and trainings to:​

    • 7 Oakland public and private schools

    • 1 Oakland youth organization

    • 16 High School Classrooms

    • 349 Students

  • Classroom Presentations: history of voting; civic engagement; why voting matters.​

  • Student-led events: voter registration; developing student leaders.

  • Other events: voter registration and information at school-sponsored events.

YOUth DECIDE Student Volunteers

Student Volunteers

High school and/or community college students work with YOUth DECIDE as Student Volunteers to:
 

  • Plan a student-led voter registration drive at their school.

  • Ask their teacher or club advisor to contact YOUth DECIDE and request a voter education presentation at their school.

  • Help design and/or deliver a voter education presentation.

  • Create voter education posters for Oakland schools.

  • Contribute to YOUth DECIDE Webpage content.

  • Encourage family and friends to register to vote.  

  • Join civics or voter advocacy clubs at their school.
